Ban
on Recreational Shootings of Ducks and Quails in Qld
August
10 2005 was a great day for Queensland’s native ducks
and quails as The Premier and Environment Minister jointly announced
that no reinstatement of the Duck and Quail Management Plan
would take place when the current Plan expires on September
1 2005.
This
decision effectively means the end to recreational duck and
quail shooting in Qld as this so-called “sport”
can only take place under the auspices of the Management Plan.
Both The Premier and the Environment Minister had indicated
the cruelty and environmental concerns raised by the vast majority
of the general public who had written, phoned or visited their
MPs or Ms Boyle directly had been taken into consideration.
They also took the advise of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee
which recommended banning recreational duck and quail shooting
due to the cruelty aspects.
This
decision is logical and reflects public thinking and attitudes
against cruelty to animals in sport.
“Animal
Liberation Qld is delighted with this ban “said Annette
Guice, ALQ President and Duck and Quail Campaign Director. “We
will however continue to lobby for a permanent legislated ban
so no future government can re-make the Management Plan.”
Animal
Liberation Qld would like to thank all our members and supporters,
other organizations and the public who supported our campaign
to ban recreational shooting of ducks and quails in Queensland.
Queensland has now joined WA, NSW and the ACT in banning recreational
duck and quail shooting.

of this campaign and why this decision was so important.

Walking
to promote awareness for animal rights and our Animal Liberation
Qld campaigns.
Much
attention was given to our human size pig in the 2005 Gold Coast
Marathon week-end 7.5klm walk. With the slogans "Ban Sow
Stalls" and "Stop Stalling Let Me Run Free" pinned
to the costume we drew a lot of interest from our fellow walkers
and volunteers. Some already knew of our campaign so obviously
the message is getting out there but many more were told about
it as we walked along. The pig was accompanied by a group of
Animal Liberations Qld members and finished the walk to high
five's and photo's from the crowd. We were the hit of the day
and our message was taken in by many hundreds of people at the
same time.

Combined
Action Day against recreational shooting of ducks and quails
in Qld.
Wet weather didn't keep us away and it also didn't stop people
from learning the truth about recreational shooting of ducks
and quails. In fact someone was smiling down on us as the rain
cleared away just prior to the display starting. Many hundreds
of people signed postcards in support of our campaign with our
message going out over almost all the major radio stations in
Brisbane. We wanted the government to understand, just because
they have cancelled this season it doesn't mean we have gone
away. In fact we are gaining more and more public support all
the time. The vast majority of people we speak to say the same
thing - LETS STOP WASTING TIME AND BAN IT PERMANENTLY NOW!!!

Animal
Liberation Qld protested outside Stardust Circus at Browns Plains
on Sunday March 6. Whilst only a small group it got the message
of cruelty in circuses across to many more people. Stardust
Circus contains exotic animals such as elephants, lions, monkeys
and all of these animals have basic needs and natural behaviours
that can never be fulfilled in a circus.
Animal
Liberation Qld supports the national savebabe campaign with
a pre-Christmas advertisement in Quest Newspapers asking shoppers
to consider how their ham has been produced.
Babe
star, actor James Cromwell, visits Brisbane to launch Animal
Australia's savebabe campaign. He is accompanied by Bella, face
of the campaign, and Sharon Holden, animal behavioural specialist.
Here are photos of James Cromwell and Bella in Brisbane. Animal
Liberation Qld is part of the national campaign.

Animal
Liberation Queensland and Animals Australia joined with other
groups outside Sea World to raise awareness of Ping Ping's imminent
return to Beijing Zoo.
Making
sure the Minister doesn't duck her responsibilities
Monday September 20 a protest was held outside the Government
office of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann St Brisbane
by members of the anti-duck and quail shooting alliance. We
wanted the new Environment Minister Ms Desley Boyle to be aware
of the strong community feeling against the shooting of ducks
and quails for recreation.
We unveiled our 30 foot banner covered in signed duck feet stickers.
People shouted their support for our campaign as they drove
or walked past our banner. It was a very successful day with
our message getting through loud and clear.
Smart states don't slaughter ducks and quails. Ban recreational
duck and quail shooting in 2004.
"Sam
the Ram" joined the Gold Coast Marathon's 7.5 k Walk on
July 4, 2004 to raise awareness of live export of Australian
sheep. The sheep completed the walk to cheers and group hugs
with children. The sheep was accompanied by Animal Liberation
Qld members wearing T-shirts with the slogan: "Live Export
- the deadliest marathon". Sam wore a sign with "I'm
running away from live export". Sam also featured in the
Gold Coast Bulletin.

Saturday
May 29, 2004 - The first day of the duck shooting season in
Queensland.
Animal Liberation Queensland organised a protest against the
use of guns to kill native ducks and quail for sport. This was
held at the lake at the Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha. During
the protest, "no duck hunt" was written in the sky
over Brisbane.
Supporters
from all the groups involved in the anti duck hunting coalition
supported the protest and the event was a great success.

We
are currently using Bus advertising throughout Brisbane to heighten
awareness of the National Campaign to Ban Sow Stalls on intensive
pig farms. We want more Queenslanders to be aware of how cruel
an intensive pig farm really is. The ad features our slogan
“And you thought traffic was congested”
superimposed over a photo of pigs in stalls and sends
a powerful message.

March / April 2004

Animal
Liberation Qld held a silent vigil in King George Square on
Thursday Oct 8 2003, so the community could show their concern
and disgust at the continued live export of animals from Australia.
This was a very successful day with many people signing petitions
and even joining in the vigil.
