Walking for All the Animals

Here I am crossing the finish line at the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run. It was hot and tiring but great to know by doing this I raised over $400 to help keep our campaigns going.

I'll be back again next year and hopefully I'll have a few others to walk along with me.

Thanks again to everyone that donated and wished me well.

Protesting outside Lennon Bros Circus at Salk Park on the Gold Coast

Animal Liberation Qld protesting outside Lennon Bros Circus at Salk Park on the Gold Coast just before the council announced their decison to ban exotic animal circuses from council land. We had great support from public and we definately got our message across in a big way.

First Council Ban on Circuses in Queensland!!

On June 30 2009 Ipswich City Council has made the progressive and compassionate decision to ban circuses with exotic animals from council lands.

This is a first for Qld and we applaud Ipswich City Council for taking this stand.

Councillor Antoniolli, who introduced the motion, described circuses with exotic animals as "relics of a bygone era." Councillor Paul Tully said "This ban is a defining moment in Qld history. This is the beginning of the end of animal circuses in Qld." Cr Tully went on to say that "Circuses with human performers would always be welcome in Ipswich."

This is a great decision for animals in Qld. We hope this decision will be the first of many in Qld as councils realise that animals, and particularly exotic animals, do not belong in circuses. That allowing circuses to make a profit whilst on their council land does not send the right messages to the public. Children learn nothing about the right and ethical way to treat animals from watching an animal circus. Animals such as lions, monkeys and elephants were not put on this earth to entertain us and they too deserve to live their lives in their natural environment.

BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL CIRCUS CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

Lion Protest

Sunday May 24 Animal Liberation Qld and RSPCA Qld launched our campaign to win over the Brisbane City Council and achieve the first council circus ban in Qld. We had the help of two animals often used by circuses and some wonderfully talented children from flipside circus. Although the weather not always favourable lots of people signed our petitions and postcards. It was a positive start to the campaign. Let's hope we can win some hearts on council.

ALQ WINS GRANT FROM VOICELESS

Animal Liberation Qld has been awarded $11,000 from the 2008 round of Voiceless Grants. We are very appreciative of the support Voiceless gives groups such as ours through their grants programe. We will be producing two new brochures in our What's Wrong With series. What's Wrong With Battery Chickens and What's Wrong With Intensive Pig Farming. Plus we will be producing three free standing banners to compliment our brochures.

CIRCUS CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

November 12 2008 marked the official launch of the Say NO to Animals in Circuses campaign. Animal Liberation Qld along with RSPCA Qld held an information and signature gathering day in Raddecliffe Place, Brisbane. Whilst the day was a bit wet and windy this did not stop people from talking to us and signing our petitions and postcards. We also had several media contacts about our alliance. This was a great start to what will be a long running and we believe successful campaign.

Animal Liberation Qld "Die In' Protest

ALQ symbolically showed with people dressed in black and draped over one another as if dead, the truth behind cheap chicken.

Over 488 million broiler chickens are slaughtered each year in Australia to provide the chicken for all your burgers and hot roast dinners.

The people of Brisbane where given brochures and a talk by Andrew Bartlett on the topic of intensive chicken farming in Australia.

We had many people come over to show support and to find out more on this issue.

Please never forgot -
CHEAP CHICKEN COMES AT AN ENORMOUS COST TO THE WELFARE OF THE ANIMALS.

BAN LIVE EXPORT - NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION - SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10 2007

Right across Australia compassionate people were gathering signatures against the barbaric live export industry. In Brisbane about 20 people gave up a few hours of their day to show the both the government and the opposition that the people of Australia want this cruel trade stopped. This campaign is continuing to gain momentum and the number of people supporting the call for this trade to cease is increasing.

As long as we supply sheep or cattle to these countries they will continue to think we support their appallingly cruel slaughterhouses. The only way to get our message through is to stop sending our animals there.

ALQ protests against exotic animal circuses
Another circus - another protest. Burtons Circus learnt that performing in Qld can attract a crowd of a different kind. ALQ members and supporters showed the circus and the public that not everyone supports the continued use of exotic animals in circuses.

Roll up, roll up and see the saddest show in town

Animal Liberation Qld protested peacefully outside the Lennon Bros Circus on Sunday April 15 to show that not everyone thinks that circuses with exotic animals are "good family entertainment".

The keeping of exotic animals such as lions, monkeys and elephants in such unnatural conditions where they forced to perform to a busy schedule and travel for long periods in extremes of weather is totally unacceptable in the 21st century. ALQ will be campaigning hard to ensure bans are put in place to stop public land and faciltiies from being used to continue the practice of animal cruelty in the name of entertainment.

Circus Protest

Keep a heart beating – Go Veg.

As hundreds of people in the Brisbane CBD were wished a happy Valentine’s Day by a group of Animal Liberation Qld supporters, they were also asked to “Keep a heart beating by going Vegetarian”.

The dedicated group carried ban sow stall banners and handed out leaflets containing badges with our slogan on them. It was a very successful day with many people stopping to ask questions about our campaigns and giving encouragement. Some people had not realised the cruelty involved in the use sow stalls but quickly agreed with us once this was explained.

We hope our city strolls will become a regular event with many more themed walks being planned for the future.

Ban on Recreational Shootings of Ducks and Quails in Qld

August 10 2005 was a great day for Queensland’s native ducks and quails as The Premier and Environment Minister jointly announced that no reinstatement of the Duck and Quail Management Plan would take place when the current Plan expires on September 1 2005.

This decision effectively means the end to recreational duck and quail shooting in Qld as this so-called “sport” can only take place under the auspices of the Management Plan.

Both The Premier and the Environment Minister had indicated the cruelty and environmental concerns raised by the vast majority of the general public who had written, phoned or visited their MPs or Ms Boyle directly had been taken into consideration. They also took the advise of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee which recommended banning recreational duck and quail shooting due to the cruelty aspects.

This decision is logical and reflects public thinking and attitudes against cruelty to animals in sport.

“Animal Liberation Qld is delighted with this ban “said Annette Guice, ALQ President and Duck and Quail Campaign Director. “We will however continue to lobby for a permanent legislated ban so no future government can re-make the Management Plan.”

Animal Liberation Qld would like to thank all our members and supporters, other organizations and the public who supported our campaign to ban recreational shooting of ducks and quails in Queensland.

Queensland has now joined WA, NSW and the ACT in banning recreational duck and quail shooting.

Walking to promote awareness for animal rights and our Animal Liberation Qld campaigns.

Much attention was given to our human size pig in the 2005 Gold Coast Marathon week-end 7.5klm walk. With the slogans "Ban Sow Stalls" and "Stop Stalling Let Me Run Free" pinned to the costume we drew a lot of interest from our fellow walkers and volunteers. Some already knew of our campaign so obviously the message is getting out there but many more were told about it as we walked along. The pig was accompanied by a group of Animal Liberations Qld members and finished the walk to high five's and photo's from the crowd. We were the hit of the day and our message was taken in by many hundreds of people at the same time.

Combined Action Day against recreational shooting of ducks and quails in Qld.

Wet weather didn't keep us away and it also didn't stop people from learning the truth about recreational shooting of ducks and quails. In fact someone was smiling down on us as the rain cleared away just prior to the display starting. Many hundreds of people signed postcards in support of our campaign with our message going out over almost all the major radio stations in Brisbane. We wanted the government to understand, just because they have cancelled this season it doesn't mean we have gone away. In fact we are gaining more and more public support all the time. The vast majority of people we speak to say the same thing - LETS STOP WASTING TIME AND BAN IT PERMANENTLY NOW!!
!

Animal Liberation Qld protested outside Stardust Circus at Browns Plains on Sunday March 6. Whilst only a small group it got the message of cruelty in circuses across to many more people. Stardust Circus contains exotic animals such as elephants, lions, monkeys and all of these animals have basic needs and natural behaviours that can never be fulfilled in a circus.

Making sure the Minister doesn't duck her responsibilities

Monday September 20 a protest was held outside the Government office of the Environmental Protection Agency in Ann St Brisbane by members of the anti-duck and quail shooting alliance. We wanted the new Environment Minister Ms Desley Boyle to be aware of the strong community feeling against the shooting of ducks and quails for recreation.

We unveiled our 30 foot banner covered in signed duck feet stickers. People shouted their support for our campaign as they drove or walked past our banner. It was a very successful day with our message getting through loud and clear.

Smart states don't slaughter ducks and quails. Ban recreational duck and quail shooting in 2004.

"Sam the Ram" joined the Gold Coast Marathon's 7.5 k Walk on July 4, 2004 to raise awareness of live export of Australian sheep. The sheep completed the walk to cheers and group hugs with children. The sheep was accompanied by Animal Liberation Qld members wearing T-shirts with the slogan: "Live Export - the deadliest marathon". Sam wore a sign with "I'm running away from live export". Sam also featured in the Gold Coast Bulletin.

Saturday May 29, 2004 - The first day of the duck shooting season in Queensland.

Animal Liberation Queensland organised a protest against the use of guns to kill native ducks and quail for sport. This was held at the lake at the Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha. During the protest, "no duck hunt" was written in the sky over Brisbane.

Supporters from all the groups involved in the anti duck hunting coalition supported the protest and the event was a great success.

We are currently using Bus advertising throughout Brisbane to heighten awareness of the National Campaign to Ban Sow Stalls on intensive pig farms. We want more Queenslanders to be aware of how cruel an intensive pig farm really is. The ad features our slogan “And you thought traffic was congested” superimposed over a photo of pigs in stalls and sends a powerful message.

Animal Liberation Qld held a silent vigil in King George Square on Thursday Oct 8 2003, so the community could show their concern and disgust at the continued live export of animals from Australia. This was a very successful day with many people signing petitions and even joining in the vigil.
